Information and Ideas
Central ideas and details, command of evidence, and inferences. Students must identify what a text states, what it supports, and what can logically be concluded.
The PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 Reading and Writing section contains 54 questions in 64 minutes, divided into two 32-minute modules. Questions draw from four domains that also appear across the digital SAT Suite.
Central ideas and details, command of evidence, and inferences. Students must identify what a text states, what it supports, and what can logically be concluded.
Words in context, text structure and purpose, and cross-text connections. These tasks focus on vocabulary in context and how authors build meaning.
Rhetorical synthesis and transitions. Students choose language or organization that best accomplishes a stated writing goal.
Boundaries plus form, structure, and sense. These questions test sentence structure, usage, and punctuation decisions in context.
Current digital SAT Suite Reading and Writing questions use short texts or passage pairs, generally followed by a single multiple-choice question. That format rewards precise reading: the student needs to identify exactly what the question is asking and use only the evidence needed to answer it.
Some Information and Ideas questions also use informational graphics such as tables or graphs, so practice should include integrating quantitative information with text rather than treating reading and data as separate skills.
Separate what the text actually supports from answers that overstate, generalize, or add information that is not present.
Use the role of the word in the sentence and surrounding logic rather than choosing a familiar dictionary meaning automatically.
Name the relationship between ideas first—contrast, cause, example, addition, sequence—then select the transition that performs that job.
Find the sentence core, determine whether clauses are complete, and apply punctuation or agreement rules to that structure.
SATprep.io keeps the initial diagnostic assessment-only. The student does not receive correct/incorrect feedback while the diagnostic is in progress, because immediate teaching could influence later diagnostic answers. During learning and practice sessions, the student does receive the correct answer and an explanation of the reasoning process after responding.
Structure and domain facts in this guide were checked against current College Board PSAT/NMSQT and SAT Suite materials in August 2026. SATprep.io is independent and is not endorsed or sponsored by College Board.
