Emphasize a similarity
Select notes that establish what two subjects share. Avoid spending most of the sentence on differences.
Rhetorical Synthesis belongs to Expression of Ideas in College Board’s current digital SAT framework. You receive a set of student notes and a specific writing goal, then choose the sentence that selects and combines information most effectively for that purpose.
Select notes that establish what two subjects share. Avoid spending most of the sentence on differences.
Include information that creates the requested contrast and use wording that makes that contrast clear.
Choose the background information a reader actually needs for the requested introduction rather than an unrelated accomplishment or detail.
Select the note that most directly justifies the claim rather than a loosely related fact.
Use a concrete note that illustrates the broader statement the student wants to establish.
Students sometimes spend time summarizing every bullet point and only then read the goal. Reversing that order is usually more efficient. The goal tells you which notes deserve attention and what relationship the final sentence must create.
A rhetorically effective answer cannot distort the notes. Check that the chosen sentence preserves dates, relationships, comparisons, and causal claims exactly. A concise answer is useful only if it remains accurate.
A student can have strong grammar and vocabulary while still struggling to select information for a specific purpose. Tracking Rhetorical Synthesis separately allows targeted practice instead of an unnecessary full Reading & Writing review.
