LEARNING MODE

Practice should show a student how to reach the answer—not just reveal the letter.

SATprep.io deliberately treats the initial diagnostic differently from learning. The diagnostic withholds feedback so it can measure current performance. During learning and practice, the student receives the correct answer and a concise explanation of the reasoning process.

Illustrative Math feedback

Example question: A service charges a $12 fixed fee plus $8 for each hour of use. If the total charge is $60, how many hours was the service used?

A. 4
B. 5
C. 6
D. 7
Correct answer: C. 6

How to get there

  1. Translate the situation into an equation: 12 + 8h = 60.
  2. Subtract the fixed fee: 8h = 48.
  3. Divide by the hourly rate: h = 6.
  4. Check the result: $12 + 8($6) = $60.

Reusable process: separate the fixed amount from the per-unit amount before solving.

Illustrative Reading and Writing feedback

Text: After a community garden added flowering plants along its border, volunteers recorded more kinds of bees visiting the garden. The volunteers did not measure bee diversity before the garden was created and did not control other changes in the neighborhood.

Question: Which conclusion is best supported?

A. Flowering plants always cause bee diversity to increase.
B. The observations show an association but do not establish causation.
C. Bees caused the volunteers to plant more flowers.
D. The observations prove that neighborhood conditions do not matter.
Correct answer: B.

How to get there

  1. Identify what was actually observed: more flowering plants and more kinds of bees were seen together.
  2. Check whether the researchers controlled variables or assigned a treatment. They did not.
  3. Reject choices that claim one factor definitely caused the other.
  4. Select the choice that matches the strength of the evidence: association, not proven causation.

Reusable process: match the strength of the answer choice to the strength of the evidence.

Why feedback is delayed during the diagnostic

If a baseline diagnostic explained every answer immediately, an early question could teach a method that changes performance on a later question. SATprep.io therefore keeps the initial diagnostic assessment-only. Explanations belong in learning and practice, where the purpose is to improve future performance.

What a useful explanation should contain

The correct answer

The student should know what the accurate result is after practice.

The decision process

The explanation should identify the reasoning or setup that controls the problem.

A reusable rule

The student should leave with a method that can transfer to a different question.

No unsupported shortcuts

Explanations should avoid tricks that work only on one wording or depend on memorizing a specific item.
